The “T-Mobile G2x with Google by LG” is going to have to get used to living with a nickname. If the iPhone has any advantages over this dual-core offering from LG on T-Mobile’s endangered 4G network, one of them will definitely be a snappier/easier-to-remember name. Beyond the moniker though, the G2x puts up a pretty good fight.
The device is best thought of as T-Mobile’s version of the LG Optimus 2x, the first smartphone to run a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. Clocking in at 1GHz, the processor makes the device a supreme handheld gaming console capable of running first-person shooters through N.O.V.A. with barely a shudder.

Where the phone really stands out though is the screen. The device itself offers the standard 4-inch, 800 x 480 pixels (as well as a giant 8-megapixel camera). However, the games you download from the Android Appstore and the images you shoot with that powerful lens can be mirrored through HDMI to an HD television. The phone then becomes a handheld controller, allowing users to surf the Web, blast bad guys or show their holiday photos on a monitor large enough for others to enjoy. It’s a neat extra function for keen gamers looking for a console experience on a pocket-sized device.
On the other hand, gamers keen enough to connect their phone to a television but not enthusiastic enough to buy a console are relatively rare, and it’s not too clear how often users will actually use G2x’s most outstanding feature. Nor does the mirroring work with every app. No Android phone will stream Netflix, for example, and even T-Mobile itself won’t allow T-Mobile TV to be used on television screens.

LG T-Mobile G2X: Running on Android 2.2
The INVIDIA processor that makes the high quality game-playing so enjoyable though also determines the flavor of Android. The G2x uses Android 2.2 Froyo; NVIDIA and LG haven’t yet managed to get Gingerbread working on a dual core chip. T-Mobile have indicated that a future update may change that. In the meantime though, the Android version has been kept relatively clean. T-Mobile have only added some of their own app packs and a few games to show off the processor, but has also indicated their willingness to work closely with Android developers to develop more apps for Android users.
On thing to note though: The device isn’t actually 4G but rather HSPA+ 14.4. It’s a speed that puts it somewhere beyond 3G but not quite 4G. As AT&T, T-Mobile’s new owners, have indicated that they might shut down their new acquisition’s 4G networks, that might not matter too much but still, the distinction has to be made clearly.
